Today is the beginning of National Farmworker Awareness Week. This is a very special week for those of us dedicated to supporting and advocating for the estimated 2.5 million farmworkers in our country working to harvest the foods we enjoy every day. The purpose of this week and its activities is to draw attention to the issues facing farmworkers and celebrating their contributions.
The culmination of National Farmworker Awareness week is marked by the celebration of the birthday and legacy of César Chávez on March, 31. Students, community members, congregations, and organizations across the country will work to raise awareness about farmworker issues through events, blogs, media pieces, videos, and a variety of activities.
Last year, AFOP helped in this effort by educating the public on the many obstacles faced by farmworkers with special blog posts. The feedback was overwhelmingly positive, so this coming week you can once again expect to see informative posts from our team, including our Children in the Fields Campaign and Health & Safety Programs experts, on current farmworker issues. AFOP will also post events we are hosting or participating in that are taking place throughout the U.S. Please check out our Facebook page or follow the conversation on Twitter using the hashtag #NFAW12.
